Having grown up in southern New Jersey, freight trains were not something I often saw. I knew these things existed. Miles of train cars being pulled by an engine which had only a handful of people on board. The cargo could be pulled nearly anywhere, through any state in the country. Every once in a while, I’d see one while I was taking an NJTransit train up to New York. It always seemed odd to find a freight train making its way through New Jersey. Everything always seemed within an arm’s reach and there wasn’t much thought paid to how it got there. It simply was there. The more you travel into the country, away from the coasts, the more you realize how important the freight railways still are to the rest of the country. It was an event when I drove under this bridge which must have been dedicated to the railways.

This is a scanned, digitally finished 35mm photograph. It was originally shot on Ilford HP5+ film. My digital process attempts to remain true to what is possible within a traditional darkroom.
